Lost Reflections - 2024

Soft Textile Sculpture - Crochet, Woven, Beading

9x10x9cm

In crafting this mini textile sculpture, I sought to encapsulate the profound sense of dread and mental entanglement that permeates our modern world. We are living through a time marked by multiple conflicts, where the global landscape feels increasingly tumultuous and unstable. This piece emerges from contemplating the countless innocent lives lost and the innumerable others hanging in the balance, evoking the heavy, often overwhelming emotions accompanying these harsh realities. Yet, amid this darkness, there is a deliberate use of bright tones and bold textures. This contrast is intentional, creating a juxtaposition between the grim undercurrents of the message and the visually uplifting elements of the sculpture. Through this interplay, I aim to reflect the complexity of our contemporary experience—a world where beauty and brutality coexist, and where we must find solace in moments of light, however fleeting they may be. I hope this piece encourages viewers to reflect on the state of the world and their own emotions. It is my desire that, while confronting the darker themes, people also find something visually striking and hopeful in the bright, tactile elements of the sculpture. This balance is a reminder that even in times of despair, there is always a spark of resilience and hope to be found.

Ode to Girlhood - March 2023

Soft Textile Sculpture - Crochet, Weaving, Sewing

63 x 48 x 23cm

I wanted to create a sculpture that captured the essence of girlhood, the wondrous journey of life, and the boundless freedom of youth. It serves as a nostalgic reflection on the memories of growing up, weaving together the past experiences that have shaped the person I am today. In every stitch and contour, I find echoes of my inner child, a reminder of the innocence and curiosity that still reside within. We mold ourselves constantly, crafting vibrant exteriors and bold personas to command attention and recognition. Yet beneath the surface lies our softness, our vulnerability laid bare, yearning to be seen and understood authentically. This sculpture celebrates the bravery of embracing change, the courage to reveal our true selves amidst the complexities of existence. It invites viewers to explore the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, acknowledging that beneath every shimmering facade lies the tender heart of someone longing to be seen, accepted, and loved for who they truly are.

Evolving Pieces - March 2023

Soft Textile Sculpture - Sewing, Woven

 40x33x25cm

The contorted sculpture symbolizes the perpetual process of shaping ourselves to fit the expectations of others, a journey marked by constant adjustments and compromises in our quest to appeal to those around us. Crafted from repurposed cloth, originally laden with holes and defects, it embodies the often-overlooked potential for renewal, in every aspect of our lives. This choice of material not only underscores the theme of transformation but also emphasizes the value of resourcefulness and the beauty of imperfection. The sculpture serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care and self-preservation in the face of societal pressures. Its visible patches, woven into the fabric, symbolize our ongoing journey of self-mending—a process that requires time, care, and patience. Through these patches, the sculpture narrates the story of resilience and growth, illustrating how, with perseverance and self-compassion, we can overcome even the most profound challenges.

Calm Before the Storm - January 2023

Soft Textile Sculpture - Crochet, Woven

 44x33x12cm

This soft textile sculpture is crafted by intertwining crocheted pieces of varying sizes and textures, creating an object that embodies the feeling of nervousness. It serves as a manifestation of the emotional turbulence associated with anticipating future uncertainties, delving into the anxiety that such ambiguity can elicit. The piece aims to articulate the delicate balance between the unease of the unknown and the privilege of being able to engage in creative pursuits leisurely. By conveying the fragility of time and acknowledging the inherent privilege of crafting art amidst the complexities of our world, the piece invites contemplation on the preciousness of each moment. It encourages a mindful appreciation of the present, urging viewers to cherish every instant and recognize the swift and unpredictable nature of life's transformations.

Connections - March 2023

Soft Textile Sculpture - Crochet, Weaving, Sewing

120 x 120x 20 cm

This sculpture embodies the essence of human connection, drawing inspiration from our innate need to touch and be touched by those around us. In a culture that often prioritizes independence and personal space, we sometimes forget the profound significance of simple gestures of connection. From casual handshakes to comforting embraces during difficult times, these moments weave the fabric of our lives. By integrating both natural and synthetic materials, the sculpture mirrors the complexity of human relationships. Each element represents a unique connection—some fleeting, some enduring, but all contributing to the richness of our experiences. The sculpture's frame encapsulates a sense of intimacy and closeness, symbolizing the deliberate efforts we make to fill our lives with meaningful connections. Varied textures evoke the diverse nature of human relationships, from the smooth comfort of familiarity to the rough edges of new encounters. Amidst the interwoven layers lies an empty space—a reminder that our capacity for connection is boundless, always leaving room for new experiences and relationships to enrich our lives. I seek to celebrate the beauty of human connection, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound significance of every touch, embrace, and shared moment in shaping our interconnected world.
